| Alumni are Strongly Urged to Donate to IIT Kharagpur this Holiday Season | |
| IIT Kharagpur needs your help. There are several
worthwhile programs that needs funding from alumni before becoming a
reality. (We will announce those program details later.) Roy DaSilva
and Shailu Verma of IIT Foundation has been spearheading the efforts
to encourage alumni to give something back to their alumni this
holiday season (and get a tax break also.) They have formed a core
team to support this efforts. Dr. Jacob Mathew (KGP-71) is the
member of this core team responsible for OH, MI, Western PA, Western
NY, Northern KY and SE IL. We are not asking you to make big donations like those made by Vinod Gupta (although they are welcome!). The important thing is to give something even if it is $25. Let us try to have 100% participation that will send a strong message to our alma mater. Together, we can accomplish great things. If you would like to serve in the local fund raising team, please contact Jacob (jacob @ icbs.com) |

ASEI National Convention in Cleveland Features Star IITans The ASEI National Convention that was held in Cleveland OH for the first time during labor day weekend (August 30-Sep1, 2003) had a very different look compared to the stale, old look of this convention in the previous years thanks to the energy and leadership of many of our own alumni. Two key members of the leadership team were Dr. Jacob Mathew, a 1971 alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and Paramjit Singh, a 50s alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur. Dr Mathew, in his capacity as the VP, Webmaster, and Program Chair for the convention wanted to demonstrate what can be done in organizing and presenting a themed convention. The theme of the conference was, Entrepreneurship for a Waking Giant - Indians in the USA Dr. Mathew, ignoring the usual stale practice of collecting names and putting them in order for the conference, started designing the technical conference from bottom up. Key areas to be presented was identified, and then a search was made to discover who will be the most qualifies to present the message in a professional way. All the submissions that does not conform to the theme were rejected. The result was an integrated, conference, with the various speakers presenting various parts of the story, in a very interesting, and informative fashion. Was it surprising that 70% of the speakers and session chairs were our elite IIT alums? Another first for this organization. Param Singh, in his capacity as conference co-chair, and public relations chair, designed and produced a professional logo, souvenir, and other marketing material for the conference. Again for the first time, the conference was promoted through mainstream media like Ohio Business Magazine and Inside Business Magazine that increased the awareness of the conference tremendously. Another example of our fellow alumns leading by thinking outside the box or as Param calls it developing TOMA - Top of Mind Awareness. Alumni Picnic With Dean of IIT-KGP a smashing success On Sunday, June 22, 2003, we had our first family picnic. It was held at the Middleton Park in Hudson. The main attraction was the newly appointed Dean of alumni affairs of IIT-KGP, Prof. Madhusudan Chakraborty. We had a good attendance considering the fact that on that weekend, there were several weddings and many alumni were on vacation. But we also had participation by alumni from Pittsburgh and officials from the Ohio chapter of ASEI. There was ample opportunities for networking. A sumptuous catered lunch was served. After that the Dean spoke about the challenges faced by the IITs. He pointed out that there is a need to strengthen the REC system as they act as feeders for IIT graduate programs since many undergraduate alumni from IIT go abroad for higher studies. Dean was very happy with the reception he got in Cleveland. He also had meetings with the officials of City of Cleveland; several corporate leaders in Cleveland area, and a tour and meetings with officials at Cleveland Clinic. Thank you all for your help and support. New Alumni Chapter formed in Detroit, MI On Monday, June 23 at 7 PM nearly 70 alumni and their spouses met at India Kitchen Restaurant in West Bloomfield, MI to greet the newly appointed Dean of Alumni Affairs of IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Madhusudan Chakraborty and to network with fellow IITians as well as to establish new friendships. By 11 PM, when the meeting was finally over, most of the attendees were very glad they came and agreed that they had a great time. Everyone had a chance to speak about themselves introducing themselves to others. For the first time, the spouses felt that they were part of the group and slowly warmed up to the meeting. The Dean made a great presentation talking about the exciting future of IITs. We also formed a chapter. A committee of 4 were appointed to lead the infant organization to the next steps. They are already talking about a picnic this summer. CBS News 60 Minutes To Rebroadcast The Segment on IITs on June 22

Everyone had a great time and are looking forward to the next event that will be organized by Prof. Jain in Mayfield Village and then by Dr. Rao in Hudson.
